The screw box

As every cooking is different every kitchen is different. One should choose their accessories according to their constraints their cooking habits. Mine as the one of Striker are kind of students’ classics: I need to save space in my kitchen and keep with me the essential, I need as well to travel and be able to move out quickly. The glass containers sold in traditional cooking stores are good but heavy, breakable: they target to fill an aesthetic function and that is not my priority at the moment.

This is a screw box converted into a spice container. With this solution, you solve the problem of spice storage: you keep it compact and economical. The idea originates from an episode of Chef’s Table on Gaggan Anand, an Indian chef.

In theory, the screw box is not intended to be used for food. The reason is that not all plastic are suitable for food use. With a little bit of research, you can ensure your safety: every plastic box has a symbol to tell the plastic type (see the codification here) this box is made of polypropylene. Polypropylene is a plastic commonly used in food industry, for yoghourts for instance, so it should be safe.

The only drawback of this method is that the spices are not hermetically closed and can get mixed or vent away. I use a layer of aluminum and tissue to fill the gap between the lid and the boxes, hope the spices will survive the travel!

I did not test it in my kitchen yet, I will tell in the future if the solution proves to be handy.

Thank you, Striker, for showing me the episode on your Indian Chef. I think this solution could come only from India!
